MAYA DANCE TEAM
About MAYA:
The meaning of the word "MAYA" has transcended any literal definition. For the women on this team, it has come to be a word representative of a family from which we derive power--through which we express our dedication and passion for dance.
As the official all-female South Asian dance troupe at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia , MAYA was born from the love of 10 enthusiastic, talented girls in the spring of 2001. Along side founder Neha Sheth, the girls strove to unite a team and, through hard work and discipline, be recognized as an outstanding collegiate dance troupe. MAYA's first performance was at Satya, a fundraising event for the catastrophic earthquake that occurred in India. The young ladies were then asked to perform in their first competition, held at the University of Delaware, and took home awards for first place and best costume. Within just one semester of existence, MAYA had become something bigger than anyone could have imagined, and were highly regarded within the Philadelphia area. The maturation of the troupe has allowed us to work towards our goal in promoting South Asian culture and awareness in many communities through the medium of dance.
The young ladies of MAYA come from all over the country and specialize in varied dance styles including (but not limited to) classical Indian dance (Bharatnatyam, Kathak), traditional Indian, hip hop, and ballet. We continue learning from each other that dance is not expression limited to one form. MAYA performances are classic, unique, and most importantly they portray the purity of their hearts as they dance.
Today, MAYA is noted as one of the premier dance troupes not only in the tri-state area, but also throughout the east coast. The ladies continue to take the troupe in new directions: competing at nation-wide competitions, participating in charity events, and working with world renowned choreographers--all the while looking to the original MAYA women for inspiration. The troupe will persist in reaching out to the community and holding true to the pillars from which they have grown. MAYA invites you to join us on our exciting journey!
